Levels of Change
Dilts' Logical levels of change shows a hierarchy of change that is a helpful model for looking at personal change.
I will give a few examples here about ways this can be useful to engineer personal changes that work.
While I don't generally deal with spirituality in change work, you can see how it effects people's identity and beliefs. I have kept in the the model for completeness.
An example of a smoker without any cigarettes in their Environment will not be smoking due to the Environment that doesn't contain cigarettes. However this will not stick if the smoking Behavior remains in place as some Environments are likely to contain cigarettes. If the smoker doesn't have the Capability to cope without them, Believes that smoking is something they do and has an Identity of a smoker the habit will likely persist.
If on the other hand a smoker changes on the Identity level and becomes a non-smoker then all levels below comply with this and the smoker can be set free from the habit.
It ay be that Identity change is too big a leap at first so Beliefs that they can do it need to be addressed first and perhaps the Capability of managing stress or cravings will be the place to start.
This is just one framework that I use when helping people make important changes to take back their own control of their life.
